Francesca Scalera, PhD

 

Francesca Scalera was born in 1978 in Mesagne (Brindisi - Italy). She received her first level degree in Materials Engineering in 2004 with a thesis on the use of the Superabsorbent Hydrogels as biomedical application in hypocaloric diet. In 2006 she obtained her magistralis degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Lecce. The thesis relates with a pilot plant used to promote the scale-up of the production of a cellulose-based superabsorbent hydrogel crosslinked with divinylsulfon (DVS) and citric acid; this system allows controlling the release of water and nutrients in time for agricultural applications.
In 2007 she started her Ph.D. Program in Materials Engineering at the Department of Engineering for Innovation, University of Lecce. The Ph.D research project dealt with the preparation and characterization of microparticles as drug carrier.
From November 2007 She is visiting research at School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, University of Brighton (UK). Her project is focused onto the synthesis of biodegradable and biocompatible nano-carriers for delivery of bioactive molecules for tissue engineering applications.
As a postdoctoral fellow, she is currently collaborating with the Department of Engineering for Innovation ( University of Salento), working in the field of cartilage and bone tissue engineering.Main research interests are focused on high performance calcium phosphate scafolds and innovative strategies for the prototyping of ceramic scaffolds.
